Christmas X-C Handicap
The traditional pre-Xmas Handicap proved to
be a triumph for Nick Garner's coaching squad and the Emery family in
particular, providing both the overall winner and fastest men's & ladies
times. Run on the usual course each athlete is handicapped based upon their
known form with the slowest starting first and the fastest last with the
objective that the whole field crosses the line together. The winner is usually
somebody who is improving or has successfull disguised their form over the
preceding weeks.
Madeline Smith is on the long road back from injury and all
of her hard work paid off as she clocked 22-46 come home nearly half a minute
ahead of second placed Sue Waldern. She also recorded the second fastest ladies
time of the day. In fact the handicapper had proved lenient to the ladies who
provided the first five finishers. The first man home was Tom Wash who clocked
23-17 to finish 15 seconds ahead of fast finishing junior Ed Hill who continued
his improvement with a clocking of 18-47.
On a misty, still day the conditions were excellent for a
race of this type and 7 men dipped under the 19 minute barries. Following the
trend of the Hampton Cup several of these were younger members and Steve Emery
led the way to clock 18-08 for the fastest time of the day with Vince Carrol
just behind in 18-17 whilst Paul Birch also ran strongly to clock 18-32. Fastest
Lady was Steve's older sister Joanne who clocked 20-46 to finish 5th overall and
show that she is well on the way back from an ankle injury which curtailed her
summer season.
There were 21 finishers and thanks once again to Bob
Mitchell-King for doing the handicaps
