SENIOR MENS COUNTY CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS

                                               A BRIEF HISTORY

The race has a long history dating back to 1931 and  includes some prolific athletes On its list of former Champions, such as 1964 Olympian Bill McKim. It was in these early years the event was dominated by Kettering Town Harriers when they had a sequence of  29 consecutive victories from 1954-82. In the early eighties some of the Harriers decided to leave Kettering and form their own Club, which was based in Corby. It was Corby A.C. who broke that K.T.H. winning sequence in 1983 when they also had The individual champion through a young  man named Hughie Boyle. He went on to win The County title 5 times in the eighties. Northampton Phoenix, as they  were then known, won their first team title in 1985, when Mike Fromant took victory at Abington Park. Although it must be said that  Northampton & County  A.C. had previously won  four times in the early fifties.   Phoenix / Rugby & Northampton  have now won a total of  14 times compared to Corby A.Cs  nine. In 2006  Kettering Town Harriers finally claimed their  40th  victory after a wait of 24 years.

                                         COUNTY  CHAMPS  PREVIEW

The 2007 County Cross Country Championships are to be held at Croyland Park, Wellingborough on Sat. Jan. 6th. This loveable venue was last used for the event in 2004 and included a ditch and stream Crossing, which all added to the excitement. Defending Senior Men’s champion Tom Bark from Corby A.C. will be looking to repeat His success of last year, but in form Matt Almond of Rugby & Northampton is hotly tipped To go one better than 12 months ago and claim the title. Holders Kettering Town Harriers will be relying on the likes  of Damian Carr, Nigel Marley,Terry Toseland and  three time champion Mike Hager if they are to retain the title. Rugby & Northampton will be counting on Stephen Gill, Tom Causebrook and Guy Petersen to support Almond in their bid to become team champions for the 15th time. An outside bet is the team from Wootton Road Runners where former runner-up Mike Aldridge, along with Craig Mattocks, Phil Melling and Chris Gallagher could spring a Surprise.

                                             CALLING ALL VETERANS

This is a request for all Veterans/ Masters to take part in the Senior Men’s County Champs. As an added bonus, those Veterans who took part in their own Championships at Kettering, can also compete again as a Senior at Wellingborough. This all adds to the atmosphere and excitement of the race and boosts the numbers taking Part as well as strengthening  your team even if you don’t make the scoring six. ten years ago at Abington Park, Northampton Phoenix needed  9 men to win the team Title. If just ONE of those nine had not taken part Phoenix would have lost the crown. As it turned out they took a one point victory over Kettering. So, please ALL members of  Rugby & Northampton  support your club and get your Entry in for this race.

Many Thanks go to Terry Egan for providing this report, lets show are appreciation by all turning out and getting back the title.
