Newly promoted Rugby & Northampton A.C struggled for team members in the first race of the season at Senneleys Park in Division 1 of the Birmingham Cross Country League.

As a result they finished in last place, but their one saving grace is the fact, that this year there will be no relegation, because the league will increase next season from 13 to 16 clubs.

With the Perez brothers and current no.1 Mathew Almond all missing from the race it was always going to be an uphill struggle.Instead, making the journey north from his home in Plymouth Guy Petersen led home the club over the tough 10 kilometre course, which included the usual stream crossing. He finished in 95th place with a time of 36 mins 56 secs. Petersen,37,last led home the club 6 years ago over the same course. On that occasion he was the reigning Club Champion and defeated newcomer Mark McKay.

For real nostalgia though,Terry Egan completed the course in second place for the club in 113th position overall (37.32).Egan has now been in the top two 40 times for his club in the League. Teenager Adrian Barritt was the third man home in 121st(37.55)and club captain Vince Carroll notched up yet another league race to finish 123rd(38.01) Rugby Youngster Steve Emery produced a good solid run to finish 131st(38.34) and completing the scoring six was another long standing member Brian Summers (151st)in 39.57.

The club failed to finish a 'B' team for the first time in 5 years, but four athletes did take part with Jamie Sewell in 169th(42.09)John Saw 181st(43.38)Bernie Myers 182nd(44.07) and Adrian White 189th(44.56) The winner of the race was Phil Hinch of Tipton Harriers who had a battle with his own clubmate Neil Burton to edge him out by 1 second and help their club to win the team race.

As the new Cross Country season gets underway, thoughts at this time go out to Neil Barford who was the Mens Club Captain when the club first entered the league 21 years ago as Northampton Phoenix. Neil was involved in a terrible accident at the beginning of August and now has a very long process of recovery.Rugby & Northampton members' wish Neil and his family all the very best.
