BAL Qualifying Match - Abingdon, 9 September 2006

Following their relegation from National Divison 3 of the British Athletics League at the end of the season, R&N AC travelled to the 'Last Chance Saloon' of the Qualifying Match at Abingdon on Saturday in an attempt to retain their league status.

The match was billed as the best quality for several years and although R&N were able to select their strongest team for 2 seasons they were facing a set of very strong & confident teams, particularly Reading & Milton Keynes. This was reflected in a series of exciting competitions with the lead regularly changing hands in some of the field events

In the event the local squad rose to the challenge and produced a ruthless performance to win the match by the huge margin of 60 points. The tone was set in the first event, the Discus, when Matt Twigg and Gary Herrington secured with maximum points with a double victory and continued through to the final jump of the final event, the Triple Jump, when Gary White, having spent the afternoon trying to beat the meeting record which is held by Jonathan Edwards, claimed a new personal best and club record for the third time in the last 4 weeks with a giant leap of 15.72m but narrowly failed to erase Edwards mark.

On a day of many heroes who each notched up over 20 points it was a true team performance with several team members completing a second event to keep up the relentless pressure on the competition. In total the team claimed 4 A string & 5 B string victories plus a host of second and third places including several season's bests.

Overall the performance was under-pinned by the teams total dominance in the field events where there were also victories for Martin Vincent (Pole Vault - A), Matt Twigg (Shot - A), Gary White (Long Jump - B), Ian Gidley (High Jump - B) plus the contributions of seasoned campaigners Gary Herrington, Kevin Murch, Neil Bulman & Steve Philips.

On the track the team also more than held it's own with a predominantly young squad taking B string victories in the 200m through Steve Maybury and the 1500m through Tom Causebrook whilst young sprinters Anthony McWilliams & Tom Stenson both ran impressively to take a brace of 2nd places in the 100m.

Finally a mention must go to Matt Almond and Dale Howlett who were the only athletes to compete in all 8 fixtures this summer, along with hurdlers John Bell, Steve Potter & Andy Reeves who have not only excelled in their own events but stepped in to cover numerous other events over the season. Thanks also to all coaches and supporters who have travelled with us on a difficult journey which finally ended on a high note.

Next season the team will be looking to consolidate and challenge for the leading places in the division to re-inforce our position as one of the Midlands leading clubs in all disciplines
