Coaches
The Club currently has 52 UKA registered coaches, ranging from Grade 1 to Grade 4.
A number of the Clubs coaches are also competing athletes, who hopefully in years to
come, will utilise their individual athletic experiences for the benefit of future
athletes, when they hang up their spikes/running shoes.
Amongst the Clubs Senior coaches, we are fortunate to have within our ranks former
GB International Gary Herrington who was also World Police Champion at Discus. Gary
is Midland Staff Coach for Throws, and he numbers amongst his charges Internationals,
Emma Merry, Rebecca Roles and Lucy Marshall. We also have former Midland Staff/Assistant
Coaches for sprints with Kevin Smith at the Northampton hub and Roy Humphries at the
Rugby hub, who currently is coach to GB International Senior sprinter, Ellena Ruddock.
Quality Middle Distance coaching is catered for at the Northampton hub by Tony Love,
who has produced many quality athletes over the years as well as Neil Glover who
is currently overseeing the clubs next generation of athletes. The Northampton
hub can also call upon the services of Kevin Smith who caters for the Sprint disciplines. As well as
these quality coaches, the Club has a huge band of aspiring coaches in nearly all of the
athletic disciplines. The Club is looking to increase their competence as coaches, by
encouraging them to attend upgrading courses within the UKA Coaches Education
Programme.
The Club is also always looking for more coaches at all levels, and will assist financially
in their training and development.
As well as providing coaching to athletes from within its own coaching structure, the
Club during this last winter, has organised a series of monthly specialist workshops,
utilising the MACC Flying Squads. Every month there have been quality workshops for Javelin,
High Jump and Triple Jump, and it is planned that these will continue to be a permanent
feature for future winters, whilst the Club does not have sufficient qualified coaches in
these disciplines.
The Club recognises the importance of its coaches. Without coaches there would be
no quality athletes.
