West Midlands Young Athletes League, Sun 1st Mar
Victory on the day secures 2nd place overall
The last race of the season in the WMYACCL took place at Perry Park, Birmingham and for a change the athletes found themselves runny in sunshine and on a dry fast mainly flat course in contrast to the extreme conditions they have endured previously.
The Rugby & Northampton team were the winning team across all age groups on the day which confirmed their position as 2nd overall over the five race series a fantastic improvement from 11th overall last year. In the process the athletes doubled their medal haul from last season in both individual & team competitions.
Individual Medals
Emily Waugh was the top individual finisher over the season competing in her first year as an U17W finishing 2nd overall. Charlotte Inwood was hot favourite for 1st place in the U15G after 3 races however a bout of illness meant she slipped down the rankings but still finished in a highly deserved 3rd place. Phoebe Ellis U11 continued the girls good form across the age groups by taking overall 4th place. Trophies are awarded to top 6 finishers and Charlotte Murphy narrowly missed out and finished overall in 10th position in the U11G.
Billy Bowman-Shaw flew the flag for the boys and in his first season as a U13 boy ran another gutsy race to secure his position as 5th overall.
Team Medals
Two team bronze medals were celebrated at opposite ends of the scale with both the U11 Girls and U17 men.
The U11 girls had improved throughout the five races from overall 5th to finish in 3rd place. The top five finishers score for the team in each race and 9 girls contributed to the team score over the five races showing the strength of talent in this young age group.
The young U17 mens teams narrowly missed out on 2nd place by 2 points and the competitive spirit between the team members was evident throughout the season which no doubt contributed to their success. A special mention to Tom Collins who has now competed in his last race as a U17 – Tom’s commitment as a team member and club athlete should be seen as a good example to all.
