Midland U15 & U17 Champs - May 2009

Success in the sun at Alexander Stadium

Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th May saw these annual championships take place at Alexander Stadium in Birmingham – a gloriously sunny weekend for once!

Rugby and Northampton AC had many athletes representing the club and enjoyed medal success on both the track and the field.  Up against athletes from other Midland clubs the competition was of a high standard including current English Schools champions.

The only Gold medal of the weekend went to Kerry Murch on the Saturday in the U15 Girls Discus. She won the competition with a best throw of 25.85m.  Kerry was one of the busiest athletes over the weekend also winning Silver in the 75m Hurdles in a time of 12.03, and just missing out on medals in the Javelin coming 4th – 29.36m and the 5th in the Long Jump – 4.97.

Charlotte Inwood broke two club records in the U17W 1500m and 3000m; both previously held by Hollie Avil who was part of the GB Olympic Triathlon team last summer.  On Saturday, Charlotte’s time of 4.38.79 won her the Bronze medal in the 1500m, and competing in the 3000m on the Sunday she went one better to get a Silver medal in a time of 10.23.44.  Both times were Grade One standard.

Other Silver medals went to Charlotte Burrows in the U17W 80m Hurdles.  Running two pb’s of 12.06 in the heat and 12.02 in the final this was Charlotte’s first hurdles race in a major competition and equalled the current club record.  She also competed in the 100m sprint winning her heat in 12.86 but had to pull out of the Final through injury. Silvers also went to two Under 20 throwers: Zoe Ash in the Hammer with a Grade One throw of 42.74m and Sam Cullinane in the Javelin with a fantastic throw of 38.11; which was not only a pb but also a new Club Record.

Two bronze medals were won in the U15 boys age group.  Logan Roberts time of 2.08.71 in the 800m was a fraction outside the Grade One standard of 2.08.00.   Logan just missed out on Bronze in the 1500m coming a very close 4th with a Grade One performance of 4.23.67.  Nic Evangelinos jumped 11.30 in the Triple Jump competition which was a new personal best for him and won him the Bronze medal.  He also took part in the 80m Hurdles coming 5th in 13.47, the javelin 6th with a throw of 34.74 and 8th in the discus with a personal best of 21.12.
