NYAL Midland Premier, Round 2 - Sun 17 May

Second victory of the season at Rugby

After a sneaky win in the first match of the league, the ever improving young athletes from Rugby and Northampton AC faced tough opposition at home against a strong Stoke team who on paper looked difficult to beat. It was touch and go with the scores all day with the home team eventually romping to the finish line with a fantastic score of 469.5 points from City of Stoke: 414.5, Wolverhampton & Bilston; 229 and the well travelled Carmarthen doing well to get a team to us with 154 points. Well done to everyone who competed on what was a very wet and windy day.

Top marks must go to the Under 13 Boys team who took 64 out of the 68 points on offer with newcomer Lukas Lakin taking 2 wins in the 75m hurdles in a Grade One winning time of 12.9 and Long Jump. Amit Patel again produced stunning performances winning both sprints with a Grade One time of 27.0 in the 200m.

The Under 13 Girls were not to be outdone with Meg Sly storming to victory in the 75m and 150m, setting a new Club Record in the 75m in a time of 10.3, closely followed by Simone Ager in both races.

Kerry Murch recorded two Grade One performances in the Under 15 girls Javelin with 31.71 and Discus with 26.89, making her a worthy winner of one of the Athlete of the Match awards. It was good to see Rhiannon Jones back in the throws circle winning the shot with 7.87m.

With a far larger team this match in the Under 15’s, the boys battled hard against a very strong Stoke team with any wins hard to come by. The best result in the field came in the javelin with a double win for Nic Evangelinos with 32.38 and Fraser Ryan with 31.27, with Fraser teaming up with Jackson Hughes in the 400m for a double win in 55.5 and 59.1. In the older boys the story was the same. The best field results came in the Triple Jump with a double win for Ben Lees and Ben Townsend with 12.60 and 9.89m. On the track a great double win came for Jonathan Chin and Luke Storer in the 200m in 23.7 and 24.7.

On his first attempt at 1500m Steeplechase, Conor Hills won a deserved Athlete of the Match award in a time of 5:03.5.

The strong all round Under 17 girls team had a good day with double wins for Charlotte Burrows and Monet Ager in the 100m, Charlotte Inwood and Emily Waugh in the 1500m, Briony Banks and Lauren Byrd in the 3000m and Charlotte Burrows and Kathryn Reynolds in the Javelin. The middle distance ladies most unseen near a throws circle, stepped up to the mark for much needed points with Charlotte Inwood in the discus, Emily Waugh in the hammer and Lauren Byrd and Gabby Moriarty in the shot!

Overall a fantastic team result with great individual performances too numerous to mention. The team are currently second in the league table behind Birchfield Harriers and on course for another spot in the National Finals.
