Jennings & Childs brave icy conditions to win
On a wintry day when many other sporting events were cancelled due to the freezing weather, Rugby & Northampton AC promoted their annual Xmas Handicap around a three & a half mile course based on the athletics track. In spite of the slippery conditions 24 runners toed the line for the staggered start where the slowest runner starts first and the fastest is on scratch with the handicappers objective being that all finish together.
This year several of the entrants were from the Saturday morning jogging club and the handicappers job was made more difficult by the fact that several had improved significantly since their previous attempt on the course. In the event the winner was Wendy Jennings who having started on 5 minutes with Rachel Shearsby and Julie Johnson quickly moved to the head of the field to be a clear winner with her two colleagues finishing second & third. Wendy's actual time was 31-54, a huge improvement on her previous attempt on the course. In fourth place was a re-junenated Steve Childs, once one of the club's finest athletes, and now training for triathlon. He recovered from a recent injury to clock 24-26. In joint 8th place were juniors Emily Waugh & Ben Jennings who treated the event as a hard training run. They clocked 22-40 in spite of the slippery conditions and showed that they will be quite at home when they move to the senior ranks over the next couple of years. Fastest man on the day was the diminutive veteran Nigel Sewell who shuffled round in 21-12, to defeat his nephew Jamie who is currently struggling with injury and clocked 21-56.
The next major action for the cross-country team will be the County Championships on 9th January
