50th County Gold for evergreen Terry
Terry Egan won his 50th County gold medal when he won the Masters title in the Northants 3000m Champs held at Corby’s Rockingham Triangle. Egan achieved the feat over a 25 year period dating back to January 1985 when he won his first gold in the Senior Cross Country team. His 50th title made it an even split of 25 Senior and 25 Veteran victories with 30 being individual and 20 as part of a team.
The race itself saw Egan from Rugby & Northampton and his own clubmate Vince Carroll battle it out in the over 35 race and although he was never headed he still had to produce a fast last lap to hold off Carroll and become the first middle distance runner from Northants to claim that magical 50 titles in a time of 10 mins 5.1 secs. Carroll had to settle for silver in 10.07.9.
Stuart Nelson achieved a County double when he took the Senior Mens title in 9 mins 2.4 secs. He added to the 5000m that he won earlier in the year. Now in his last year as a Senior before turning 35, Nelson defeated some very good Juniors who were taking part in the race, one of which was his R&N training partner Rory Grant who set a personal best when winning the bronze medal in 9.20.2.
There was an excellent run from Sarah Bennett in the previous Ladies race. The R&N under 17 athlete took the title in her age group with a time of 11 mins 29.7 secs and chasing her home was Genevieve Roberts in 11.40.1 to claim bronze in the under 15 Girls race.
