BAL Knock out Cup Semi Final - Sat 24th July
Ladies win and men take second at Luton
The BAL Knock-Out Cup semi-finals were held at 6 different venues. Rugby & Northampton AC Senior Men and Ladies teams were given the semi-final match at Luton. The BAL Knock-Out is a fairly new format comprising 10 events and a Medley Relay over a period of 2 off just over 2 hours. It is also a one-person event competition, and means that only 10 athletes can compete on the day.
The Ladies team who last year just missed winning the Final by one point, were looking forward to another semi-final win. Whilst the team was not at full strength, the Club were confident of progressing to the Final. That proved to be, with the Ladies team winning 4 events and 6 second places from the 11 events. The 4 winners were Sophie Wright winning the 100m in 13.1 secs, Ellena Ruddock winning the 200m in 25.2 secs, Charlotte Burrows winning the 100m hurdles in 16.8 secs and Kirsty Obern winning the Pole Vault with a height of 2.10 metres. The 6 second places were achieved by Rachel Pearce recording 61.2 secs, Briony Banks in the 800m recording 2 mins 26.4, Emily Waugh in the 3000m recording 10 mins 40.0 secs, Zoe Ash in the Hammer with a throw of 42.82 metres, Charlotte Burrows in the Javelin with a throw of 32.32 metres and the Medley relay team who recorded 2 mins 55.7 secs. Katie Rowe was close to her PB in the Triple Jump with a leap of 10.96 metres.
For the Mens team were 3 winners, the most impressive of which was the 400m victory by Ross Allen recording 49.1 secs, a new PB and equalling the Club record. The other two winners were Luke Hyland in the Hammer with a throw of 46.93 metres, and Martin Vincent in the Pole Vault with a height of 2.20 metres. Ian Gidley was 2nd in the Triple Jump with a jump of 12.03 metres
At the end of the match, the Ladies team were convincing winners by 17 points and go forward the main final in London on Saturday 4th September, and the Mens team were runners-up to Luton and go forward in the same match, in the Plate final.
