Jamie Sewell becomes first winner of Tony Hetherington Cup

Rugby & Northampton AC hosted the second race in the East Midlands Grand Prix Series with their annual 6 mile road race and had 28 runners taking part.

This year the first R&N athlete home was presented with a special trophy in memory of Tony Hetherington who died tragically last year. The winner of this award was Jamie Sewell who finished in 10th place to lead home his club with a time of 34 mins 50 secs. Sewell finished 8th overall in the series last year and this run gives him a good start for his 2009 campaign.

Just eight seconds behind was Terry Egan who claimed the prize for being the first runner over the age of 45 when he finished 15th in 34.58. Brendan Moen was the next man across the line in 23rd spot with 35.54 (6th M40) and Dave James was the third man over 45 in 29th position with 36.18. This quartet gave R&N victory in the mens team race and along with Egan, Moen and James, Alan Mould helped the Veteran men to also win the team competition when he recorded 37.29 for 46th place.

Sally Baker finished second in the over 40 Ladies race with a time of 37 mins 58 secs for 57th spot overall and 7th lady. After breaking the course record at Silverstone the previous week in the over 60 section Angela Copson was timed at 39 mins 22 secs for yet another victory. Completing the Ladies team was another veteran Linda Carter, who was also first in the female 55 category. She recorded 45.06 to put the Senior womens team in 3rd place and the Veterans in second spot.

The over 65 ladies race was again won by Pat Francis in 63 mins 46 secs and top three positions were also achieved by Heather Fiddament- Harris (2nd over 55 in 45.51), Barbara Parkinson (2nd over 60 in 47.09) and Jayne Partridge (3rd over 55 in 49.42).
